What is Android

On a beautiful Saturday Morning, I woke up from what had just been a very hectic week but I had a very good Smile on my face because of two things. 

Firstly, It was a day I set aside to purchase my dream Android phone, well for now which was the Techno Phantom 5 and secondly because God gave me a chance to see another day.  That’s how I see it daily and I thanked him for that afterwards.  Then the usual morning norms followed (Bathing and co.), after it all; I was ready was the word! So I headed to my place of this elusive purchase the famous Computer Village here in Lagos.

Well for those of us who don’t really know Computer Village or what it’s all about, as the name implies it’s like a very big village, the biggest or in that bracket for tech items in West Africa and its located in the heart of Lagos State Nigeria, Ikeja to be precise. On getting there I located the Techno shop where I was to Purchase my all new Techno Phantom 5 device and through the joy in my facial expression I guess even the dealer could tell what it meant to me.  On trying to ascertain and agree on a price with the dealer an act popularly known over here as pricing someone walked in. 

A Woman not too old, and not to young but seemed she wanted to also purchase one of the phones on show so she asked “I WANT TO BUY AN ANDROID PHONE?”, the sales man replied, WHICH MADAM? then she reiterated "I WANT TO BUY AN ANDROID PHONE?", this continued and the sales man was actually getting annoyed I could tell from his tone  and me being a good situation reader just understood that the woman actually had money to buy the phone but didn’t just know which Android Phone to purchase.  The joy that was initial very evident on my face just turned sour as I was held up in that shop for some time,  with I and the sales boy just trying to put the lady through on the Android phenomenon also prices and all that. But this is basically the story and motivation behind this post which is glaringly sort of like a welcome post on this blog.

 

So what is Android..

Has become very imperative because almost everyone knows that the famous green-logo Android is a creation of search engine giants Google but Android has a lot of meanings, by the way found out the lady’s name was Gloria and I believe Gloria had one of the perceptions of an Android definition but just needed to know what she really wanted.

If you're like Gloria no problem don’t be ashamed or alarmed not everybody actually knows all, and what’s knowledge if not to be shared. I’m just going to be discussing this very simple to the eye but many defined question What is Android?...with the definitive answers!

In Science Fiction

Firstly in Science Fiction it’s just a robot with a human experience. Although the Android most of us know if not all has that green signature logo and is reality…SO NO ROBOTS!!!

Open-Source Operating System

Secondly, Search engine giants Google maintain an open-source operating system which could also be called Android open source project…for you who is not really a techie this part might be a little hard to grab, I don’t blame you I’m not too but I kinda got a grasp of this thing and I’ll break it down to the tiniest bits for you.

Its got the basic level stuff to power and use an electronic device and is actually given freely to anyone interested in getting the code and building an operating system from it.

Maybe you’ve heard somewhere heard the saying “Android is open and free”, well this is what they mean by that. Also if you’ve come across Custom ROM’s which are modified versions of the Android then I guess you might have dabbled with this type of Android

Thirdly, there’s the ascertion that for example a Samsung Galaxy S5 or that Sony Xperia is simply android as also that Blackberry Passport is Blackberry, Iphone 5s is Iphone and  the Lumia’s are generally windows phones.  
This was actually Gloria’s perspective coming into the shop that day. Calling all phones of different specifications, features and manufacturers one name and their operating system is now like the norm which might be understandable somehow because for example the phones with the android Operating System (OS) have practically the same applications running on them but there are still differences in their own significant way.

 

The Popular Android we know

As we’ve already ascertained earlier that Google actually owns the Open Android which is like a mere essential but has everything to power and use a smartphone and tablet, the final and probably the most popular of this what is Android? Definition series is the Android Operating System usually in your Samsung, techno phones, etc.

It’s gotten from the Open Android although just with some extra bit of stuff so they are actually different from each other in their own way but the OS is all based on the open version of android. So still android!

So when your friend tells you he or she just got another new android, he/she is talking about yet another type of android, or when Sony or techno tell us about how cool android is on their latest phone they are actually talking about their own android, or you see a sci-fi movie and they talking about android you know it’s a robot.   

Let me be clear I’m not saying any one of these perceptions or definitions is wrong but nevertheless, going out to purchase an android device like Gloria is sort of suicidal this days. You have to know the manufacturer of the device and the particular make because android is presently the most used operating system in the world right now so you could imagine the variety. If you step into a shop just stating “I WANT TO BUY AN ANDROID?”, even though you really want to buy one you might just have your work cut out for you and also the sales person finally maybe not purchasing one at the end.
This blog meanwhile would generally help you a lot in that regard with all things Android including news, reviews of various Android devices, Android App reviews, where to buy these Android devices and at best prices too and a host of other Android related stuff.
